Storage Pod vs Storage Unit: Which One Fits Your Situation?
A storage pod (a container delivered to your driveway) beats a storage unit for moves, renovations and house clearouts, because you load once at home. A storage unit wins when there's no room at home or you rarely need the contents. A Box rents both from Cambridge, MD, at $99 to $179 a month. Call and we'll match you.

When a pod at home is the better choice
You're moving. Load over a week of evenings instead of one frantic Saturday. When you're ready, we haul the loaded container to your new address, or back to our lot until the new place is ready. Nobody unloads and reloads a truck in between.
You're renovating. Furniture and boxes come out of the rooms being worked on and sit in the driveway. When the floors are done, they go back in.
You're clearing out a family home. Sorting takes longer than anyone expects. A container on site means you can sort room by room, keep what's going with you, and send the rest to donation or the dump without racing a deadline.
What you need at the address: roughly 10 feet of level width, about 60 feet of straight approach for our tilt-bed truck, and no low branches or wires overhead. Gravel, packed dirt, asphalt and concrete all work. Tell us about soft ground or tight turns when you book.
When a storage unit is the better choice
There's no room at home. Apartments, rentals with no yard, and in-town Cambridge properties where the driveway is already full.
An HOA or a flood-prone yard rules out a container. Waterfront lots that take water in a nor'easter are a bad place to park your belongings, and some neighborhood rules don't allow a container in the driveway at all.
You'll rarely need the contents. Long, quiet storage after a downsize or between houses, where a trip to the lot every few months is fine.
Our Cambridge storage units are the same wood containers we deliver, at the same monthly rates, with no delivery fee because they never leave the lot. You get a personal gate code, the lot is camera-monitored, and you back up to your own door.

Who A Box isn't the right fit for
We don't offer climate-controlled storage. If you're storing a piano, fine art, wine, film or anything that needs a steady temperature, a facility with climate-controlled units is the better choice, and we'd rather tell you that on the phone than rent you the wrong thing.
If you want to get in at 2 a.m., our lot access runs during posted lot hours, so a facility advertising round-the-clock access may suit you better.
What can go wrong with a pod, and how we handle it
Condensation. Steel containers sweat. On a humid Chesapeake afternoon followed by a cool night, moisture forms on the inside of a metal roof and drips on whatever is underneath. Our containers are wood-built with a weather-tight roof, which is why we've used wood since 2006.
Soft or uneven ground. The truck sets the container gently on the ground rather than dropping it. If your yard is soft after rain, say so when you book and we'll plan the spot with you.
Contents insurance. We keep the container weatherproof and locked, but we don't insure what's inside. Your homeowner's or renter's policy often covers belongings stored off-premises; ask your agent, and the Maryland Insurance Administration's consumer pages explain how to read a homeowner's policy.
A move that runs long. Billing is month to month with no penalty, so a closing date that slips doesn't cost you a contract fee.
Seasonal storage this fall
October is when boats come out of the water and RVs get parked for the winter. If that's what you're storing, our RV, boat and trailer parking is on the same gated lot. For a winter move, the container works the same in any month; just remember to update your mailing address with the USPS change-of-address service.
